The leaves are starting to fall to the ground more as we end September which means it’s time to get your rake ready. While raking may seem like a chore, it really helps out the trees in your yard. Here’s why not raking leaves can be bad:
- Breeding Ground for Pests: Pests love to live in piles of leaves because they provide a dark, damp, and insulated environment that creates the perfect shelter for them to breed. When spring rolls around, they will eat your plants.
- Suffocates your Trees Roots: Tree roots need to breathe. Fallen leaves can become compacted and heavy which can block sunlight, water, and air from getting to a tree’s roots.
- Encourages Fungal Diseases and Mold: Fungal diseases thrive in damp, dark, and poorly ventilated conditions and fallen leaves create that perfect environment for them. When fungal diseases and mold reach your trees, it can damage or even kill them.
