When winter hits hard, most people worry about branches snapping under heavy snow or ice buildup; however, many people forget about tree roots. Here’s how you can protect the roots from freezing temperatures:

  • Add a Thick Layer of Mulch: Mulch works like insulation for tree roots. It helps to keep soil temperatures stable throughout winter. It helps to slow soil freezing which reduces moisture loss.
  • Protect Against Wind Exposure: Cold winds remove heat from both the tree and the soil. You can reduce exposure by planting shrubs on the windward side and use burlaps as a temporary barrier. Even slowing wind speeds by just a little bit can help to protect the roots.
  • Water Before the Ground Freezes: Roots can still take moisture in during the fall and well-hydrated soil stays warmer. You should deeply water the area around the tree and water slowly to encourage deep root penetration.
