As the weather cools and winter approaches, strong winds and heavy snow can take a toll on your trees. A healthy tree can withstand a strong storm, but you may have weak trees in your yard that you’re unaware of. Here are some ways you can spot weak/dangerous trees:
- Check for Splits or Cracks in the Trunk: Cracks or peeling bark often signify that there is internal decay or structural weakness. These issues make it more likely for a tree to fall under pressure from the wind or snow.
- Inspect the Roots: Roots are the foundation of a tree’s strength. If you notice soft, cracked, or exposed roots, it may mean that the root system is decaying. Trees with root damage are more likely to fall.
- Look for Dead or Dying Branches: Dead branches are one of the most obvious signs of trouble. They often appear brittle and have no leaves. During a storm, these branches can break off and cause serious damage.
