What are Frost Cracks?
In winter, a term that surfaces surrounding tree health is “frost crack.” Frost cracks are vertical lines that generally form on the south or west side of the trunk and generally in younger trees. Throughout the day sunlight warms the bark but once the sun goes away, the bark shrinks or contracts. The inner layers of tree bark contract slower than the outer layers, and the pressure created as the result of uneven contracting is what leads to wood cracking.
While they might be unsightly, frost cracks aren’t a major threat to the health or survival of a tree. However, frost cracks create perfect cavities for insects so be sure to monitor your tree throughout the year!
