As we’re transitioning to the middle of August, we’re getting closer to fall and it is never too early to prepare. Many see fall as a sign to stop taking care of their trees as much because it won’t matter since winter would be coming soon. This is not the case. Fall is still an important time to be taking care of your trees. Here’s a checklist to help you prepare for the fall season:

  • Add and Freshen Up Mulch Around Your Trees: Adding mulch around your trees is an easy and small task, but it can do a lot for the trees. Adding mulch helps to add organic matter to the soil which helps to conserve moisture and maintain temperatures.
  • Support Weak Limbs: Some limbs may need extra support during the winter. One way you can help these limbs is by cabling them. Cabling helps to reduce strain and stress damage from storms and provides adequate support for the branches.
  • Be on the Lookout for Mushrooms: Mushrooms often pop around the base of trees during fall. It’s important to be on the lookout for them because they pop up shortly and they can be very damaging to trees. Some mushrooms can attack and decay the tree’s roots. Prevention is the best way to combat mushrooms.
